Good Books + Tools are Better than Art School

I didn't go to Art School… I figured that for the price of a formal arts education, I could outfit my studio with all the tools I needed to do the work I wanted to do, while actually doing it. I learned how to use them by, well, using them (with the occasional RTFM moment). I also read everything I could get my hands on by and about the artists whose work I like, backtracking to see what they had learned from the artists they liked. And I talked with other artists, watched them at work, helped them on projects, etc. I may be self-taught, but I like to think that I'm one of the world's best educated self-taught artists.

The tools, books and movies in the store below are among my favorites from the studio and studio library. I'll add items as I think of them. I do make a small amount from Amazon if you buy things from the store, but my main motivation here is really to share the best stuff that shaped my work. If I get to buy a few extra books as a result, that's great. I'll add 'em to the list if they deserve it.

All the items below can be purchased securely through Amazon. Use the links in the upper right corner of the aStore to view different categories, including: Art + Design Reference Books, Artists + Art, How To Books, Design Books,Tools I use, Art Flix + other films.

Artist Statement + Bio | Curriculum Vitae

I'm best known as an artist and designer. Relaxing makes me tense, so I tend to put in a lot of hours on diverse projects.

On the way to a successful art career I've been a poet and writer, a tech geek, a print and web designer, illustrator, industrial designer, musician, teacher, actor, set designer and even a paid guru once.

It's all the same thing in the end— I wake up most days thinking about how I want to change, fix or improve some aspect of the world. And after a couple cups of coffee I get started on it.

My specialty is impossibility remediation: if it can't be done, I'm on it.
